With reference to the remarks in

the schedule enclosed in my Despatch No. 135 of the 15th.

instant, on the subject of a Supplementary Vote for $3,000

to cover the cost of purchasing certain buildings at Lai-

-chi-kok which have been used since 1904 by the Chamber of

Mines Labour Importation Agency as a Depôt for emigrants

to the Transvaal, I have the honour to inform Your Lordship

that I have acquired the buildings under the following

oircumstances and to request your sanction of the expendi-

-ture.

For some years past the want of a

Quarantine Station has been felt. A small one formerly

existed on Stonecutters' Island which has since been

transferred to the Military Department, and in 1901 pro-

-vision was made in the Estimates for an expenditure of

$20,000, out of a total estimated cost of $85,000, for a
